Description

Responsibilities:

The Hariharan Lab at the University of California, Berkeley uses Drosophila to investigate the mechanisms that regulate tissue growth and regeneration. The individual will be expected to conduct a research project that investigates growth and regeneration of the Drosophila imaginal disc. Therefore the person will conduct genetic experiments in Drosophila that involve the setting up, execution and interpretation of genetic crosses. Many experiments involve the dissection of Drosophila larval tissues, their analysis by immunohistochemistry and visualization using confocal microscopy. The individual will use molecular techniques such as PCR and cloning to generate transgenic Drosophila lines and analyze mutants generated using CRISP-Cas9. The individual will use dissociated imaginal disc cells to generate single-cell RNA seq data and use computational methods (using python and R) to analyze data. The hired person will prepare data for verbal presentation and figures and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. The person must be able to conduct research in a collaborative environment with an appreciation for lab safety and an environment that values equity, inclusion and diversity. So long as the physical distancing and work-at-home restrictions are in place, the individual will be required to work remotely, primarily to analyze data from single-cell RNAseq experiments and to prepare those data for publication. It is anticipated, that as those restrictions are eased, the person will conduct experiments as allowed.

Basic Qualifications (At the time of application):

A PhD or equivalent international degree.

Additional Qualifications (By start date):

A publication record.

Preferred Qualifications:

Postdoctoral experience in Drosophila genetics. Evidence of high-quality publications in areas of relevance to the project. Proficiency in Drosophila genetics, molecular biology, single-cell RNA sequencing and computational analysis of data.

Appointment:

This position reports to Iswar Hariharan. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for one year with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Salary and Benefits:

This position provides full benefits. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley Assistant Project Scientist salary scale.
