The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a non-profit, academic research organization formed through the partnership of UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and the Gladstone Institutes, and located on the UC Berkeley campus. The IGI is seeking to recruit a highly motivated, independent-minded research full-time Specialist to assist in the development and advancement of next-generation CRISPR-based approaches to control the hematopoietic and GI systems in the clinic. Successful candidates will lead efforts to apply cutting edge functional genomics approaches ex vivo and in vivo to identify molecular circuits of relevance to particular areas of severe unmet medical need; collaborate on developing clinic-ready approaches to engage those circuits; and collaborate on pre-clinical efficacy and safety studies to enable first-in-human clinical trials.

The Specialist will be responsible for performing tasks related to optimizing programmable epigenome editors with Cas9 and new effectors for preclinical research with the intent of bringing this technology into first-in-human clinical trials. This position will require experience in genome editing and functional genomics screening. The Specialist will perform gene editing, culture human cells for protocol and process development. Ample mentorship and support will be provided for the entire duration of the project.

Basic Qualifications (At the time of application):

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree in molecular and cellular biology or related field
  • Research experience
  • 3D-cell culture experience
  • NGS data analysis experience
  • Experience training and managing laboratory personnel
  • CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing experience
  • Functional genomics screening experience
  • Lentivirus production and cell transduction experience
  • Molecular biology and cloning experience
  • Experience with in vivo disease models
  • Experience in cell line engineering and validation
  • Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills


This position reports to Dr. Fyodor Urnov. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for one year with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Salary and Benefits:

This position provides full benefits. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley Specialist series salary scale.
