Position Summary

The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE) at Michigan State University announces an available Assistant / Associate Professor, Fixed Term position for research, capacity building, and program supervision as part of its anticipated Mozambique-related activities under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy Research, Capacity, and Influence (PRCI).  The anticipated position is available starting on or about April 1, 2021.  Initial funding would be for two years, with extension possible based on funding and performance.  The position will likely be based in East Lansing, Michigan (MSU campus) though out-posting to Mozambique may also be possible. 

PRCI’s approach emphasizes local capacity building through collaborative research and training.  AFRE’s research and capacity building in Mozambique will provide civil society, donors and government officials with guidance on how to improve food and nutrition security, enable rural livelihoods to become more resilient to climate shocks, and support Mozambique’s journey to self-reliance by building research and policy analysis capacity related to agriculture and food systems development.

The Assistant / Associate professor will serve as co-PI for the Mozambique project in collaboration with Dr. David Tschirley.  The candidate is expected to supervise one Research Associate (post-doctoral) and one graduate assistant and to work closely with on-campus faculty and in-country staff.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Agricultural economics, development econ

Minimum Requirements

Ph.D. in agricultural economics, development economics, or related field.

At least five-years’ experience in international development research and outreach, with a strong preference for those with in-country experience, whether extensive short-term or living overseas.

Demonstrated ability to supervise a team of researchers ranging from stateside PhDs to local partners who may have PhD or MS or Bachelor’s degrees.

Ability to lead while working as a team player.

Extensive experience in the use of Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) data and other household data sets.

Capability to understand and communicate in Portuguese; Spanish capability will also be considered.

Excellent communication and academic writing skills.

A strong work ethic and dedication to high-quality research.

Willingness to extend the period of your assignment if funding and project priorities permit.

Desired Qualifications

Strong commitment to working with local counterparts and building their skills.

Formal teaching experience and/or previous experience conducting technical trainings for researchers.
