The position will be based in the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and is expected to begin in the upcoming academic year. Position SummaryThe successful candidate is expected to establish a competitive, externally funded research program in desert ecology, with a focus on sustainable agricultural systems in arid and semi-arid environments. Research areas may include:
Particular emphasis will be placed on marginal environments, including saline and sabkha soils, and the development of innovative strategies to enhance soil productivity, carbon storage, and ecosystem resilience. The candidate is expected to contribute to the development and advancement of the Zayed Program for saline agriculture and genetic resource conservation, including the study and utilization of halophyte and native desert plants. This includes establishing and managing a gene bank for halophyte species and stress-tolerant crops, supporting biodiversity conservation and the selection of plant materials adapted to harsh desert conditions. In addition, the candidate will lead research on soil rehabilitation and sustainable land management practices, including:
Research will also address carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O) in desert agroecosystems, aiming to develop strategies for carbon sequestration and mitigation of climate change impacts. These approaches may include:
