The Department of Plant Sciences and Wadham College are recruiting to an Associate Professorship of Plant Sciences, to be held in the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford, South Parks Road, Oxford together with a Tutorial Fellowship at Wadham College, Parks Road, Oxford. The successful candidate will start on 1 September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.


Preference will be given to applicants with a strong background in plant cell biology, but applications from any individual whose research complements the existing profile of the Department would also be welcome. The successful candidate will be required to carry out research that will contribute to the Department’s research reputation; to teach, supervise and examine undergraduate and postgraduate research students; and to contribute to and participate in the administration of the Department. In the College they will have joint responsibility for admission, teaching, and pastoral care of students reading degrees in biology. They will play a role in the running of the College as a charity trustee and a member of its Governing Body.


The successful candidate will demonstrate the following: a doctorate in a relevant field; a proven research record of high quality at international level in plant cell biology, or any other area that complements the research profile of the department; a compelling proposal for a sustainable research programme in plant cell biology, or any other area that complements the research profile of the department; a record of attracting research funding, or in the case of new investigators evidence of the potential to do so; experience and ability to teach and supervise effectively at both undergraduate and graduate level in the general area of plant biology, and as set out in the ‘Duties of the post’; ability and willingness to undertake the full range of academic and administrative duties expected within the Department and the College; excellent communication, interpersonal, time management and organisational skills necessary for undertaking tutorial teaching and the pastoral care of students in the College, and for working constructively with colleagues at all levels; demonstrable independence in research, with a primary focus on plant cell biology; an interest in imaging techniques, and a willingness to contribute to the development of the Department’s microscope facilities; experience of small-group teaching.


Combined University and College salary from £47,263 p.a. plus additional benefits (where qualifying) including college housing allowance of £8,826 p.a. plus access to a Joint Equity Scheme or Housing Loan; or single accommodation in Wadham College. An allowance of £2,754 p.a. would be payable upon award of Full Professor title.
