The Department of Quantitative Cell Biology in the Faculty of Biology at the University of Münster (WWU),
Germany, is seeking to fill two positions for

Doctoral Research Associates
(PhD students)

(salary level TV-L E 13, 65%)

The fixed term part-time (65% FTE) positions are available from the earliest possible date and funded until 31 December 2025. Applicants are invited to join the interdisciplinary research team of Prof Carsten Grashoff to investigate the mechanobiology of cells (see for example: Grashoff et al. 2010, Nature; Austen et al. 2015 Nature Cell Biology; Ringer et al. 2017, Nature Methods; Kanoldt et al. 2020, Nature Communications). The project will explore molecular cell adhesion forces at the cell-matrix interface and investigate the mechanics of living cells using highly sensitive tension sensors,
multiplexed fluorescence lifetime imaging and super-resolution microscopy (see Fischer et al. 2021, Nature Communications).

Your tasks:

The positions are tied to working towards a doctorate. The PhD students will work in a young and international group of cell biologists and biophysicists and will learn to apply a wide range of quantitative technologies to study processes of subcellular force transduction at molecular resolution in metazoan cells. These techniques include innovative Crispr-Cas9-based tension sensor approaches, fluorescence lifetime imaging and multiplexing, as well as single-molecule resolved microscopy. The PhD students will have access to state-of-the-art microscopy infrastructure in the Grashoff laboratory and the WWU Imaging Network. Projects will be embedded in local graduate programs with excellent
supervision and within a dynamic and international community of PhD students.

Our expectations:

Applicants are required to hold a master’s degree in the biological sciences such as biology, molecular biology and biomedicine or another biologically oriented discipline in physics and chemistry (e.g., biophysics, biochemistry and life sciences). A good command of the English language is necessary, while German language skills are helpful but not a requirement.

We especially welcome applications from cell biologists with previous experience in molecular cloning, cell culture or fluorescence microscopy. Biophysicists with experience in super-resolution microscopy such as DNA-PAINT and image data analysis are especially welcome to apply.
