The Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for the position of Full Professor of » Human Genetics « to begin at 1 April 2021. The professorship is a tenured W3 position. The Full Professor will be appointed Director of the Department of Human Genetics at TUM’s university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar.

Scientific environment

The professorship will be assigned to the TUM School of Medicine, one of Germany’s top medical schools in research and teaching, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary and translational research. Collaborations with the German Center for infectious disease (DZIF), for cardiovascular research (DZHK) and translational cancer research (DKTK), the planned centers for pediatric and adolescent health research and for mental health, as well as close interactions with TUM’s natural and engineering sciences promote an excellent scientific environment.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the position include research and teaching, patient care and clinical service in the area of human genetics, as well as the promotion of early-career scientists.

We seek to appoint an expert in the research field of medical genetics and genomics with an emphasis on elucidating the molecular basis of monogenic and complex diseases and developing diagnostic-predictive and/or therapeutic strategies. Establishing a clinical sequencing facility at TUM’s university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar and expanding the clinical services of the institute by implementing innovative diagnostics including next-generation sequencing and array based methods in cooperation with medical subspecialties is a core responsibility of the professor to be appointed.

The teaching load includes courses in the subject area and fundamentals courses offered by the department, as well as courses for other TUM departments.

Qualifications

We are looking for a high-profile candidate with an international reputation, who has demonstrated an outstanding academic record and an internationally recognized research program. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude, including the ability to teach in English, are prerequisites. Board certification in Human Genetics (Facharzt Humangenetik) is required.

Substantial clinical and leadership competence as well as leadership quality, research experience abroad, and a proven ability to establish, acquire and lead competitive and cooperative research projects are required.

Candidates are expected to be fully committed to collaborate with scientists at the TUM School of Medicine and at the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar, as well as with scientist at other TUM schools and academic departments, and to participate in interdisciplinary research collaborations. Scientific participation in existing and future national and international pertinent research networks are expected.

As a rule, the holder of this professorship will not be employed as a civil servant (Beamte) under German law. The duties related to patient care as Director of the Department of Human Genetics, including the right to bill additional fees, will be regulated separately through a head physician contract with the university hospital’s board of management.
