The Experimental Animal Center (EAC) is responsible for the in-vivo research at the University of Bern. The EAC aims to create optimal conditions for animal testing. The 3R (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the "Culture of Care" and compliance with guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy.

The central laboratory animal facilities are a service of the EAC. The purpose of these facilities is the breeding and keeping of small animals and the provision of the infrastructure for carrying out animal experiments as part of biomedical research.

The position is available for September 1st 2020 or by appointment.

• Operational and personnel management of the new mouse breeding facility of the EAC
• Deputy for the Head of the Central Animal Facilities
• Management of the genetically modified (GM) colonies and tracking with the appropriate software
• Provide guidance to researchers on the generation and breeding of genetically modified mouse lines
• Provide support for researchers in correctly filling in the GM data sheets and Form M as well as in the creation of nomenclature-compliant names
• Responsibility for compliance with the animal protection law, hygiene and monitoring
• Participation in the veterinary processes and the care of the laboratory animals of the EAC
• Contribute to the educational mission of the University by proactively supporting the internal education program
• Ensuring the activities and services according to the instructions and process guidelines of the university
• Work with the animal welfare officer to implement the 3R principles in breeding and housing

Participation in teaching and research is desirable, especially in the area of 3R. However, your own research activity must be compatible with the service and complement it if possible.
You have a degree with a doctorate in veterinary medicine and a qualification in laboratory animal medicine; ECLAM diploma or equivalent training. You bring in-depth knowledge of generation of genetically modified mice and the breeding of experimental rodents. You are familiar with the common animal management programs. You work independently and goal-oriented, but also as a team member. You have solid management experience in complex structures, exemplary communication, professionalism and interpersonal skills. The working language is English or German.
