Role Description

The School of Physics, Engineering and Technology brings physicists and engineers together to push the frontiers of knowledge, foster innovation and meet the grand challenges facing society. Our aim is to develop new technologies that work for the public good, in an environment where everyone can thrive.

As a School, equality, diversity and inclusion are central to our culture and we strive to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel. We aim to ensure that there is a supportive and egalitarian culture at all levels and across all staff groups and offer a range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, staff engagement forums, campus facilities and services to support staff from different backgrounds. We are proud of our Juno Champion and Athena Swan awards which recognise our commitment to creating a fully inclusive and supportive environment. We aim to inspire the wider community to engage with science and engineering through our outreach work.

Applications are invited for a Chair position that has been created to drive exceptional developments in Physics of Life research undertaken within the School, in areas relating to soft matter biophysics theory and/or computation. The successful candidate will complement existing research of the School’s Discovery Theme in the Physics of Life which encompasses a wide range of topics spanning multiple length scales from quantum biology and individual molecules through to single-cell physics and the biophysics of cell populations and complex tissues.

You will demonstrate a clear vision for innovations in theoretical and/or computational soft matter biophysics and how to rapidly establish a multidisciplinary world-class reputation in this exciting field, linking with Physics of Life colleagues as well as developing further links across the School, University and with a range of external partners.

The Role
You will contribute to the School's growing research reputation and wider impact, in addition to designing, developing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across a range of related subjects. Specifically, you will:

  • Carry out internationally outstanding research, scholarship and innovation, and disseminate it via peer-reviewed journal articles and international conference presentations
  • Play a leading role in the School in identifying and securing external funding through research grants and contracts, and in developing collaborative research income-generating activities
  • Design, develop and deliver teaching across a wide range of modules and within a particular programme or subject area
  • Supervise PhD and Masters students
  • Foster key institutional collaborations both within the UK and internationally to maximise impact
  • Contribute to the leadership and management of the School, including supporting early career staff and developing new collaborative initiatives

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have:

  • PhD in relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Outstanding and internationally recognised knowledge in a field of relevance to the vision for Physics of Life at York
  • Ability to define, lead, manage and attract funds for internationally excellent research, operating across disciplinary boundaries
  • Ability to consistently publish academic work that is recognised as internationally leading
  • Exceptional capability in curriculum development, course design and teaching, learning and assessment methods at UG and PG levels and in encouraging student access and engagement
  • Attraction and effective supervision of postgraduate students

Closing date: 10 September 2023
Interview date: 05 October 2023
