The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry seeks candidates for a Specialist position in the England Laboratory. This position will be hired at the Junior, Assistant, or Associate level dependent upon the applicant’s experience. Dr. England’s research is focused on developing chemical tools for decoding biology and advancing medicine. The laboratory is currently developing synthetic small molecules to control the activity of nuclear receptors, a class of intracellular proteins that regulate gene expression in response to endogenous hormones and other small molecules. These receptors play critical roles in human development, physiology, and disease and have proven to be effective therapeutic drug targets. Under general direction, the incumbent will characterize the activity of ligands targeting the nuclear receptor Nurr1, a potential therapeutic target for Parkinson’s disease, and LRH-1, a potential therapeutic target for several cancers. This is a research position. Applicants are expected to be able to work independently and possess the ability to troubleshoot experiments when they don’t work. In addition, the applicant must posses the ability to analyze their data and clearly communicate their research techniques and results in written and oral formats. Specific activities associated with the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Preparation of high quality/purity protein samples. Technical skill set: primer design for PCR, DNA subcloning and mutagenesis, over-expression and purification of protein.
  • Target gene transcription assays. Technical skill set: DNA cloning, primer design for PCR, rtPCR, qPCR.
  • In Vitro Ligand Binding Assays. Technical skill set: differential scanning fluorimetry assays (DSF), direct binding assays (SPR).
  • Cellular Ligand Efficacy Assays. Technical skill set: aseptic cell culture procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Specialists appointed at the Junior level must possess at least a BA/BS degree (or equivalent degree) in life sciences (or related field).
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant or Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in life sciences or at least 5 years of research experience in the related field.
