Position description

The Dr. Ana Paula Arruda Lab, in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology (NST) within the Rausser College of Natural Sciences (RCNR) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) seeks applicants for the position of Junior to Assistant Specialist in the area of metabolism and metabolic diseases.

The Arruda lab is a multidisciplinary research team focusing on the understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. More specifically, we aim to understand how the regulation of organelle calcium signaling allows cells and tissues to adapt to nutritional challenges in physiology; and how the failure to do so leads to metabolic diseases. We use a diverse set of approaches to answer our questions such as basic biochemistry, calcium imaging, high - end microscopy and physiology techniques.

Responsibilities may include:

· Under supervision, assist with research lab projects with the performance of experiments such as sample preparation, protein and RNA extraction and analysis, cell culture, and microscopy.

· Under supervision, assist with research experiments involving calcium imaging.

· Interpret the results, perform analysis (such as graphing and calculating statistics) and organize data reporting.

· Contributing to discussions about the results/project and helping in the design of new experiments.

· Engage in the intellectual activities of the lab and to actively participate in lab meetings and discussions.

· Assist lab members in the maintenance of mouse colonies, including breeding and genotyping.

· Help with lab organization (receiving, storing, cataloging lab supplies).
