Mann Department of Biomedical Engineering (https://bme.usc.edu/) in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering (https://viterbischool.usc.edu/) at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, seeks applications for a teaching position (Lecturer or higher rank) to teach undergraduate and graduate students in courses. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, teaching-track faculty position on the non-tenure track.  We are seeking candidates to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the USC academic community.  The USC Viterbi School and department are committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and welcome applications from women; individuals of African, Hispanic, and Native American descent; veterans; and individuals with disabilities.


Competitive candidates will have the training and experience to teach effectively in a highly-ranked department that advances undergraduate students through an accredited B.S. degree program and graduate students enrolled in world-class M.S. and Ph.D. programs.  Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g. biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering).  While we are interested in candidates with backgrounds in all areas of biomedical engineering, we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise and skills necessary for the fabrication, regulation, and translation of biomedical devices, such as electronics, instrumentation, electromechanical systems, machining, prototyping, and programming data acquisition software. Knowledge of machine learning techniques and prior experience in applying these algorithms to biomedical data or signals would be an added advantage.  And while we seek applicants at the rank of Lecturer, in exceptional cases applicants with longer and more accomplished teaching experience and/or other significant credentials may be considered for a commensurate higher-ranked position (e.g., Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor of Practice, or Professor of Practice).


The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching the undergraduate capstone design course, including developing and managing interactions with industrial and clinical partners for student projects. The candidate will also teach courses on other BME topics including, but not limited to, medical electronics and medical devices for undergraduate and graduate students. The ideal candidate will have a record of excellence in teaching that incorporates active learning and curriculum innovation, and will be committed to developing course content based on non-lecture based pedagogical approaches. The selected candidate will also be an integral component of the ABET re-accreditation process of the undergraduate program. While research is not an expectation for the position, teaching faculty are supported in pursuing professional development, and an interest in biomedical engineering education is expected.

The annual base salary ranges for the following faculty ranks for this posting are:

  • Lecturer: $89,250 - $105,000

  • Senior Lecturer: $105,000 - $120,750

  • Associate Professor of Engineering Practice: $120,750 - $141,750

  • Professor of Engineering Practice: $141,750 - $183,750
