Overview:

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is one of the UK's leading research-focused higher education institutions, a member of the elite Russell Group of UK universities, and ranked joint 9th in the UK in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. The Chemistry submission, in particular, was ranked 7th in the UK for research outputs.

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Organic Chemistry, as part of our ongoing investment and expansion in research excellence. The post is part of a strategy to enhance the Department of Chemistry as a centre of research of international standing.

You will be expected to develop an innovative teaching and research portfolio in organic chemistry, publishing world-class research that complements current activities within the Department and across the other Faculties of the College. This will lead to a successful externally funded research program supporting postdoctoral research staff and PhD students, and establishing links with industry. You will also teach Organic Chemistry to undergraduate and postgraduate students and perform the normal administrative duties expected of a member of academic staff.

The post holder should hold a PhD in Chemistry and have a profile of successful research in the general field of Organic Chemistry, as evidenced by a strong track record of publications. A commitment to the delivery of high quality student education is also essential to support our taught programmes in Chemistry.

The Chemistry Department has recently seen a £5.5M investment in its Joseph Priestley Chemistry building, including a new state-of-the-art chemistry laboratory. The Department hosts a number of facilities, including 600MHz NMR, X-ray facilities, cryo-EM, high-resolution Mass Spectrometer and analytical facilities.

At QMUL, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable. Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence.

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities including an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is a full time, permanent appointment, with an expected start date of August 2021. The salary will be Grade 5-6, in the range of £42,433 - £52,833 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
