The School of Biological Sciences

The School of Biological Sciences is large and diverse and provides a vibrant research and teaching environment with a strong collegiate culture. We have a global reputation for our research: two-thirds of our research was rated as 'world leading' or 'international excellent' in REF 2014. We conduct research in four mainareas comprising: Genomics and Computational Biology; Ecology and Environmental Microbiology; Protein Structure and Disease Mechanisms; Plant Productivity. Our infrastructure and facilities match our ambitions to carry out excellent research.

The School comprises in the region of 900 students supported by over 100 academic, research and support staff. We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the areas of Biology, Human Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Genetics, and Marine Biology. We champion research-led education, where teaching is informed by our research and students develop analytical, laboratory and field based skills. Our aim is to provide a challenging and rewarding environment for both our students and staff.

We are now seeking to make an appointment at the Lecturer level.

Duties of the Role

Candidates must be willing and able to teach across our Biological Sciences Undergraduate degree schemes and Postgraduate Taught Courses. Applicants must commit to a wider teaching remit in eukaryotic molecular biology extending beyond the plant sciences. The School of Biological Sciences provides a vibrant, multi-disciplinary research environment. Appointees will have access to a range of state-of-the-art core facilities supporting research in the areas of microbiology, bio-imaging, proteomics, environmental biology, controlled climate/environment experiments, well- equipped molecular biology and computational biology laboratories as well as new energy-efficient greenhouses to be available from mid-2020. 

You will contribute to excellence in education by designing and delivering substantive and effective teaching and learning support, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, along with enhancing the scholarly reputation of the School and the University.

Duties will also include covering high quality research, obtaining research funding, supervising postgraduate research students and carrying out such teaching and administration duties as requested by the Head of School.

Skills and Qualifications required

The successful candidate will have a relevant doctoral level research degree in a relevant branch of the Life Sciences and a significant track record of post-doctoral research.

You should have a research focus aligned to understanding the underlying molecular and cellular basis of environmental and genetic factors that strongly influence plant productivity and crop yield, and a demonstrable commitment to deploying advanced methods and technologies in molecular genetics, synthetic biology, plant physiology and computational biology. It will be important to demonstrate a track record of high quality research outputs and an ability to obtain grant support. 

Strong communication skills and the ability to deliver clear explanations to our students at all levels are essential for this post, along with ability and willingness to engage in impact, knowledge exchange and outreach activities.
