Position Description

The University of Washington Department of Medicine is recruiting for one (1) part-time (50% FTE) fieldwork coordinator faculty position in the Division of Medical Genetics. This position is a non-tenure track, multi-year eligible appointment, at the faculty rank of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position has an annual service period of 12 months (July 1-June 30). The University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. Anticipated start date is April 1, 2020.

 

The University of Washington is developing a new MS in genetic counseling degree with a mission to be an equitable and inclusive genetic counseling graduate program that provides innovative training of lifelong learners for a career in care, leadership, and science to meet the evolving needs of precision health.

 

The primary responsibility of this position is oversight of the fieldwork (clinical and laboratory rotations) portion of the program. Duties include:

  • Assisting in all aspects of the program including the development, delivery and evaluation of the curriculum associated with the program
  • Overseeing the organization, structure and scheduling of the fieldwork curriculum in accordance with established educational standards and practices
  • Serving as instructor-of-record for fieldwork courses in the program, including student mentorship and evaluation, in collaboration with clinical preceptors
  • Directing the student evaluation process for fieldwork portions of the program to assess student progress and documented achievement of practice-based competency objectives for each rotation
  • Developing annual plans for assuring an appropriate variety and number of fieldwork experiences for each student, implementing modifications as needed
  • Enlisting the support and active participation of practicing clinicians and health care institutions in the clinical education of genetic counseling students throughout the region
  • Orienting new clinical supervisors to their responsibilities
  • Planning and implementing clinical supervisor training experiences
  • Monitoring the quality and effectiveness of supervised fieldwork instruction and regularly evaluating the teaching effectiveness of the clinical/laboratory sites involved with the program

Qualifications

Successful candidates for this position will have an MS in Genetic Counseling or closely related field (or foreign equivalent); current certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC), the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG), or the Canadian Association of Genetic Counselors (CAGC); and have a minimum of 3 years of experience as a genetic counselor with knowledge and experience in genetic counseling, teaching, and clinical supervision.
