The School of Biological Sciences delivers cross-disciplinary research fostered by the Institute for Life Sciences at the world-leading, research-intensive University of Southampton (ranked 8th in the UK). We have core strengths in molecular and cellular biosciences spanning interests in ecology and evolution, plants and food security, microbiology, neuroscience and developmental biology. We host the National Biofilms Innovation Centre and the Centre for Proteomic Research. We have close alliances within our own Faculty including the Schools of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Psychology, Health Sciences, Geography and Environmental Sciences and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton and with the Faculty of Medicine including the newly established Centre for Cancer Immunology. We pride ourselves on the quality of our education (1st in the Guardian League Tables 2019 and 2020 for Biological Sciences for student satisfaction within the Russell Group). 


In the first phase of recruitment to five new positions we are seeking an outstanding candidate for a Lectureship/Associate Professor. You will have a growing international profile in Bioinformatics and/or Systems Biology research, an interest in cross-disciplinary collaborations and ambitions that will build on our core strengths in molecular and cellular biosciences. You will demonstrate a passion for education and an ability to enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, in particular for bioinformatics, in this important cross cutting discipline.


Strong applicants should demonstrate:

  • a doctorate and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline

  • PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a discipline associated with biological sciences

  • ability or potential to obtain peer-reviewed funding 

  • distinction in research through high-quality publications in bioinformatics and, or, systems biology

  • ability or potential for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
