PhD fellowship in Quantitative 2D NMR Spectroscopy

Department of Food Science (Section of Food Analytics and Biotechnology) is offering a PhD scholarship in Quantitative 2D NMR Spectroscopy. The project is part of the research project “Learning to EXplore the 2nd Order Advantage of 2D NMR (LEX2)”, which is financed by Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond. Start date is (expected to be) 01.01.2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Department of Food Science is internationally recognized for excellence in food science research and education, strong industrial collaboration and with a vibrant international environment, where English is the primary working language. The Department has the mission to contribute with new fundamental knowledge and innovative solutions for society and industry in order to support sustainable food production, food security and safety, as well as production of consumer attractive, palatable and high-quality novel foods promoting human health and well-being. We are characterized by a high involvement in interdisciplinary research at both international and national levels.

Further information about the Department can be found at https://www.food.ku.dk/english/.

The project

The candidate will work on the LEX2 project which is made in collaboration with The Technical University (DTU compute). The project aim at project developing 2D NMR acquisition tools and corresponding state of the art data methods for solving fundamental problems in metabolomics/foodomics such as signal overlaps, alignment and ambigious interpretation. The project will thereby develop novel computational tools that can move the state of the art NMR based foodomics and  metabolomics research to a new level providing an unambiguous and in-depth identification and more reliable quantification of metabolites in biological samples. The project will explore advanced tensor decomposition methods for ultra-fast 2D NMR measurements for high throughput NMR analysis of complex food and biological samples. The project will be executed in collaboration with Prof. Morten Mørup the Section for Cognitive Systems, DTU Compute.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a candidate within the field of food and biological sciences (foodomics and metabolomics) who is interested in solving complex analytical problems. The candidate must have a background in analytical chemistry and/or NMR spectroscopy with an interest in working with multivariate data analytical methods.

Our group and research- and what do we offer?

The PhD position is in the Foodomics research group which is a part of Department of Food Science, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We are located in Copenhagen. Both salary and working conditions are excellent. Copenhagen is often named as the best city in the world to live, and for good  reasons. It's world renowned for food, beer, art, music, architecture, the Scandinavian "hygge", and much more.  Parental leave is generous and child-care is excellent and cheap.

The Foodomics group offer a creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. The group is a down-to-earth and fun place to be. Our research facilities include modern spectroscopy laboratories which include three high resolution NMR spectrometers.
