Roskilde University Doctoral School of People and Technology

The Doctoral School of People and Technology Roskilde University invites applications for a fully funded interdisciplinary 3-year PhD position in Sustainable Urban Food Systems in connection with the H2020 research project “FOOD TRAILS”.

We are looking for inspired and inspiring researchers who want to work in and contribute to an exciting interdisciplinary research environment at the intersection of socio-technology and food studies. The position as PhD scholar is limited to 3 years and starts preferably at 15. December 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of PhD project

This PhD project will be involved in mapping the food policies in the 11 cities participating in the FOOD TRAILS project as well as involved in developing and facilitating the living labs on food systems innovation in these cities. Furthermore the PhD project will together with partners develop and conduct workshop models for sharing knowledge and experiences between cities and regions.

The PhD project itself, is a part of a strategic initiative at Roskilde University investigating the potential of regionalized (urban, peri-urban, rural) food systems as driver of developing sustainable agro-food systems. The specific research design and research question will be developed as a part of the project cooperation.

For a number of years the research community that this PhD project will be embedded in at Roskilde University has played a key role in the development of research in sustainable food systems, and this PhD project will thus add a new element to the dynamic and interdisciplinary research community at Roskilde University. This research community has a number of national and international projects within, for example, living food lab projects, circular and regenerative food systems, food waste, development of methods, competencies and tools for sustainable transition in the agro-food system in collaboration with leading international partners.

The overall aim of this PhD project is: i) at a theoretical-methodological basis to map and characterize the urban food systems. This entails concepts for identifying, characterizing and qualifying the actors, discourses and stakeholders relevant to and for the urban food system or potentially vital in the developing innovation and collaboration and, ii) based on this, develop a concept for a sustainable, healthy and regenerative food system for this area and its greater system, in close connection to the FOOD TRAILS project and iii) contribute to the international research body on sustainable food systems and food studies.

This project is feeding into a strong multi-sector regional emphasis on food system developments and the specific research question and design must be developed as a part of the PhD project.

The research is expected to develop and apply theoretical-methodological perspectives informed by Science-Technology Studies (STS) and similar relevant socio-technical theories applied to the research area of food studies and agro-ecology. This includes strongholds on applying analytical perspectives as for example follow the actor, actor mapping and mapping of material/economic flows, as well as decision-making capacity throughout the governance system. The theoretical academic works is expected to be published in relevant international journals in cooperation with colleagues involved in the cooperation.
