PhD Position in Hydrogeology and Landscape Hydrology
University of Oldenburg Institute for Biology and Environmental Sciences

As part of the BMBF-founded research position "Selective removal of monovalent ions from saline water for groundwater recharge and drinking water production - innovatION" we are looking for a PhD candidate at Faculty V, Institute for Biology and Environmental Sciences (IBU), Research Group Hydrogeology and Landscape Hydrology.

PhD candidate (m/f/d)

(E13 TV-L / 65%)

The working group Hydrogeology and Landscape Hydrology investigates hydraulic and hydrochemical processes in the aquatic environment, in particular the interaction between surface water and groundwater, coastal hydrogeology, the role of water in ecosystems as well as the behaviour of pollutants in groundwater.

Interest in water desalination techniques is increasing because of the globally rising water demand. The aim of the project innovatION is the development of an energy-efficient, selective, membrane based desalination method for the removal of monovalent ions from ground and surface water as well as the exploration of potential applications under consideration of chemical, economical and ecological aspects.

Membrane development is subject of the investigations by project partners. The hydrogeological subproject will study effects that could arise when partially desalinised water is used for drinking water production, discharged into surface water or used for managed aquifer recharge. Potential interaction between product waters and sediment during groundwater recharge will be investigated with laboratory soil columns. PHREEQC-2 and PHT3D will be used to simulate hydrochemical processes during water mixing, soil passage through the columns and during fictive aquifer recharge at suitable locations identified with the project partners.

We are looking for a candidate with a university degree (Master or Diploma) in earth or environmental sciences, water engineering, environmental modelling or an equivalent education with hydrological/hydrogeological components. The candidate should have experience in experimental laboratory work (e.g. column studies) and hydrochemical modelling as well as great interest in hydrogeological and environmental research questions. Excellent communication and organisational skills and a strong interest in collaborative research are also required.

The Universität of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of women in science. Therefore, equally qualified female candidates will be given preference. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification.

Please send your application under the header “innovatION” with CV, list of publications and certificates via e-mail in a joint pdf-file until the 09.04.2021 to Prof. Dr. Gudrun Massmann, Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences, Faculty V, Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, D-26111 Oldenburg:
