About the Department

The Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP) conducts research and offers education at the Arrhenius Laboratories on the Frescati campus.

The department has approximately 100 staff members, including doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers, distributed across 25 research groups.


Project Description

The PhD project will be conducted within the research project:

"Epigenetic Basis of Reproductive Thermotolerance"

The project focuses on understanding how epigenetic regulation contributes to reproductive thermotolerance in plants.

The successful candidate will use molecular approaches to investigate:

  • Plant fertility under heat stress.
  • Plant development under heat stress.
  • Epigenetic mechanisms regulating thermotolerance.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must satisfy both the general and specific entry requirements for postgraduate education.

The qualification requirements must be fulfilled by the application deadline.

General Entry Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A second-cycle degree; or
  • Completed at least 240 higher education credits, including 60 credits at the second-cycle level; or
  • Equivalent qualifications obtained in Sweden or elsewhere.

Specific Entry Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • At least 120 higher education creditsat Bachelor's level in:
    • Molecular Biology.
    • Biology.
    • Chemistry.
    • Or a closely related subject.

and

  • At least 60 higher education creditsat Master's level in:
    • Plant Physiology.
    • Or a closely related subject.

This must include:

  • A research project comprising at least 30 higher education credits.

Applicants with equivalent qualifications obtained in Sweden or abroad are also eligible.


Selection Criteria

Selection among eligible applicants will be based on their ability to benefit from doctoral education.

Assessment will consider:

  • Knowledge and experience in relevant research areas, including:
    • Plant reproduction.
    • Stress biology.
    • Plant genetics.
    • Epigenetics.
  • Experience with one or more of the following techniques:Documented knowledge in a relevant research field.
    • Microscopy.
    • Epigenome analysis.
    • Molecular biology techniques.
    • Working with Arabidopsis.
  • Analytical and creative thinking.
  • Initiative.
  • Independence.
  • Ability to collaborate.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English.

Selection follows the Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University.


About the Employment

The position is offered as a fixed-term doctoral studentship in accordance with Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100).

Employment conditions include:

  • Full-time doctoral education corresponding to four years.
  • Doctoral students are expected to devote the majority of their time to their doctoral studies.
  • The position may include teaching, research, and administrative duties of up to 20%, with the employment period extended accordingly.

Initial appointments are made for a maximum of one year, after which employment may be renewed for periods of up to two years.
