Description

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Post-doctoral research position: Aquatic Ecology & Biogeochemistry

The Hernes Lab at the University of California Davis is seeking to fill a post-doctoral researcher position for a 2-year project utilizing metagenomics and biomarker analyses to investigate the role of non-algal particles in the lower foodweb of California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay Delta (the Delta). In particular, the post-doctoral researcher will perform independent research linking wetland plant detritus with zooplankton survival and growth in a system where limited food availability has in part led to a precipitous decline in native pelagic fish species. In most estuarine systems, phytoplankton primary production is perceived as the major food source for zooplankton; however the Delta historically has low primary productivity, and recent studies have indicated that detritus may be a significant energy source in this system. Through field sampling, chemical characterization, and laboratory feeding experiments, the post-doctoral researcher will expand upon current knowledge of the role of detritus in zooplankton diet in the Delta. In addition, the post-doctoral researcher will implement, optimize, and promote a newly-developed metagenomic analysis technique to assess algal and non-algal zooplankton diet preferences, and will also serve as the primary link between project collaborators specializing in aqueous biogeochemistry and molecular biology.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct feeding and survival experiments in conjunction with technician
• Carry out biomarker analyses (lignin and fatty acids) to assess food quality
• Carry out metagenomics analyses in conjunction with Co-PI Dr. Tomofumi Kurobe
• Plan and participate in fieldwork sampling in the Delta
• Coordinate project meetings
• Prepare manuscripts for publication

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Ph.D. in aquatic ecology, oceanography, environmental chemistry, limnology, or related field
• Demonstrated ability to write and publish papers
• Willingness to collaborate and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across disciplines
• Demonstrated excellent research capabilities required to carry out innovative and insightful research.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants with:
• Experience with biomarker analyses, with GC-MS expertise a plus.
• Experience with ‘omics analyses, especially amplicon or shotgun metagenomics
• Familiarity with large datasets, and well-developed data processing skills, including experience with Linux
• Experience with zooplankton taxonomy, identification, and staging

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT

The position is 100% for 12 months initially, renewable for an additional 12 month period contingent on satisfactory progress.
The position will remain open until filled with a preferred start date of April 1, 2020 or sooner.
