Postdoc in 3D Bioprinting of Microalgae and Cyanobacteria, Marine Biological Section, Department of Biology


A position as postdoc is available in the Marine Biological Section at the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen. The postdoc will be financed for 24 months by the project “Printing microbial forests” funded by an Experiment grant from the Villum Foundation (Denmark). The project develops and applies novel 3D bioprinting techniques to design and construct photosynthetic biofilms of various spatial complexity. This includes the use of novel bioinks that incorporate sensor nanoparticles for chemical imaging of printed constructs containing living cells. We look for candidates with a relevant PhD degree (e.g. in bioengineering, mechanical engineering, medical engineering, soft matter physics, biophotonics or materials science) who have a documented expertise in 3D bioprinting, modelling of mass transfer and light propagation, or development of bioinks. Experience with 3D modeling and design software or advanced image analysis will be advantageous.


The postdoc’s duties will include research within the development and application of 3D bioprinting methods for fabrication of constructs containing microalgae/cyanobacteria in different spatial configurations. This includes 3D design, tests of biocompatibility of various bioinks, measurements of metabolic activity and light propagation, as well as modeling of mass transfer and photon transport in printed constructs. The postdoc will be integrated in a strong interdisciplinary team of sensor chemists and microbiologist. The post may also include performance of other duties, and travel as part of national and international collaborations. The main workplace will be at the Marine Biological Sections premises at Strandpromenaden 5, Helsingør, 3000, Denmark.

Terms of employment  

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.


Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.


The starting salary is currently up to DKK 426.625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.952). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
