It is becoming increasingly apparent that mechanical processes have an important effect on cellular behavior. Fundamental processes in a tissue including cell division, cell death, and the emergence of coordinated motion of cells are all governed by the activation of biochemical signals by mechanical stresses. To what extent the structure and dynamics of coordinated movement in groups of cells is mediated by biochemical signaling and how the feedback from the collective motion affects the distribution of biochemical cues is an outstanding question. To advance the physical understanding of biological systems under realistic conditions, this research will build on our recently developed theoretical and computational frameworks to study how geometrical constraints focus stresses in specific ways to provide particular function by activating biochemical signals. The potential projects are: I. On the single cell level understanding the dynamics of the underlying genetic network from external stresses. II. Studying the impact of the topology of the embodying cell environment on the growth of multicellular layers through channeling the mechanical stress. III. The study of the interconnection between biochemical signaling and the collective motion of cells.

 

This research program will use theoretical and computational modeling, both at the individual cell level and at the multicellular level, to explain the underpinning mechanism of stress regulation in complex geometries and subsequent activation of biochemical signaling by mechanical stresses. Moreover, there is the possibility of exploiting this understanding to investigate smart structuring of the environment in order to impose particular modes of coordinated multicellular motion.

 

The postdoc’s duties will include research within theoretical biocomplexity as well as participate in teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. 

 

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. 

 

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 426.625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.952). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
