Postdoc in Microbial Ecology

A 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in microbial ecology is available in the Microbial Interactions Research Group at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The position commences 1 July 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a cross-institutional project with collaborators from Terrestrial Ecology Section, University of Copenhagen and Entomology and Plant Pathology Section, Aarhus University. The project aims to decipher the interactions between microorganisms and nematodes, and the impact of the microorganisms on nematode infection potential on plant roots. In addition, the project seeks to identify key microorganism and determine their mode of action through isolation and characterization.

The postdoc’s duties will include research within the project as well as teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. The successful applicant will be involved in:

  • Characterization of the nematode microbiome using amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenomics bioinformatics analyses
  • Development of isolation approaches to target microorganisms relevant to the interaction with the nematode
  • Selection and isolation of bacterial strains from nematode cuticles that can decrease the infection rate on roots from nematodes
  • Participation in the acquisition of external funding
  • Participate in teaching activities at the department including the supervision of  BSc and MSc students

It is expected that the candidate disseminate the findings through peer-reviewed journals, conference papers and to the public through popular science channels or similar.

Qualification requirements

  • A PhD degree in microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or related fields
  • A strong motivation for the area of research
  • Proficiency in R
  • Excellent written and spoken English

Key criteria for the assessment of candidates

Special importance will be attached to applicants having the following professional and personal qualifications:

  • Documented experience analyzing amplicon sequencing datasets
  • Experience with metagenomics
  • Experience in multivariate statistics
  • Well-developed collaborative skills
  • Publication record within the field of research

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently up to DKK 437.435 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 74.801). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
