Postdoc in Root Development and Drought Responses of Faba Bean

Department of Plant and Environmental Science, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a 36-months Postdoc position in root development and drought responses of faba bean commencing 01.05.2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences conducts fundamental research and has a strong focus on applying basic science to solve real world challenges, primarily within the plant, soil and environmental sciences. Research and teaching cover natural resources, agriculture, biotechnology and synthetic biology from the molecular level to the ecosystem scale.

The research group Crop Physiology and Production Systems aims to do research focusing on plant growth and quality at the crop, crop rotation, and cropping system level. We work with the development of plants for food, feed, and biomass production. Optimization of crop production and quality include improvement of plant potential through breeding, based on studies of genetic diversity including new crop species. More information about the research group is available at:

Project description

The position is within the project: IMFABA - Local and sustainable protein production with improved faba beans, a collaboration project between Aarhus University, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at KU and two large Danish breeding companies. The overall goal of the project is to develop improved faba bean cultivars with higher protein content and increased yield stability. With the specific aim of increasing yield stability in faba bean the post doc studies will be focused mainly on the possible connection between root depth and distribution and drought tolerance. This will include studies on root phenotyping of selected lines in a greenhouse based study in rhizotrons with and without drought stress. Belowground traits will be correlated to aboveground traits such as 13C accumulation, stomatal conductance, leaf temperature and stomata density. The primary root phenotyping will be performed through imaging in the rhizotrons followed by image analysis for root quantification. In addition, this will be combined with field studies testing different screening methods for drought tolerance such as drone thermal imaging, soil water use determined by water sensors and different plant physiological traits in plot trials with and without drought stress.

Principal supervisor is Associate professor Dorte Bodin Dresbøll, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences,, Direct Phone: 35333452.

Job description

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks are:

  • Planning and managing greenhouse studies of root phenotyping
  • Planning and managing field studies of drought responses of different faba bean lines
  • Analyzing thermal drone images in relation to drought stress
  • Investigating variation in stomatal density with image analysis
  • Write scientific articles

Candidates with experience in field experiments, plant physiology and/or analysis of drone images will be prioritized.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently up to DKK 437.843 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 74.871). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
