Working for the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology (MMI), Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FoMD), is a research-intensive department focusing on advanced studies in Virology.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Matthias Gotte, the PDF works in a laboratory that studies medical countermeasures for protection against viral infections. Dr. Gotte is the Director of UofA’s pandemic preparedness program SPP-ARC, which provides an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment covering strong expertise in virology, immunology, biochemistry, chemistry and structural biology (https://www.ualberta.ca/en/striving-for-pandemic-preparedness/index.html). The PDF will study viruses associated with a high epidemic potential with emphasis placed on the design of effective antivirals or vaccines against influenza viruses.

Duties 

  • Expression and purification of recombinant proteins.
  • Works with baculovirus, bacterial and/or mammalian expression systems.
  • Protein engineering and functional testing.
  • Works with structural biologists with focus on cryo-EM studies
  • Testing of antiviral drugs and/or vaccines in cell-based and cell-free systems.
  • Development of enzyme and/or neutralization assays.
  • Presents research findings at local, national and international conferences.
  • Other duties as determined by the principal investigator, including writing of scientific publications.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in area of virology, biochemistry or related disciplines is required.
  • Experience in aspects of drug and/or vaccine development is preferred.
  • Experience in influenza research is considered an asset.
