at the Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Grens Institute. Closing date: 18 January 2021.

The Department of Molecular Biosciences, Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) conducts experimental basic research in molecular cell biology, intergrative biology and infection and immune biology. The research environment is characterized by a modern and advanced methodology and has a strong international profile. MBW is one of the larger departments of the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University with more than 30 research groups and about 200 employees, of whom 65 are doctoral students. Project description

The project focuses on factors predisposing to an increased risk of radiotherapy (RT)-induced toxicities: second malignant neoplasms (SMN) and acute reactions. The SMN subproject will focus on lymphomas and brain cancers. The aim is to determine the degree of individual variability in the level of RT-induced mutations in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Moreover, we will validate biomarkers of susceptibility to SMN based on functional and genetic assays. Blood samples will be collected before and after RT from patients treated at Karolinska hospital.

The aim of the second subproject is to explore if patients at risk of acute radiation reactions can be identified by the composition of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Blood samples will be collected from patients with prostate and breast cancer due to the high incidence of these cancer types in Sweden, as well as by their common side effects (skin erythema for breast and urinary problems for prostate cancer). Blood will be collected from patients at the Karolinska hospital and SNPs will be analysed in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach.

Main responsibilities

The position involves handling of blood samples as well as application of cell culture techniques, isolation and amplification of DNA/RNA, analysis of DNA damage and repair by microscopy-, and flow cytometry-based tests. The successful candidate will also participate in other projects running in the group, all based on studying cellular effects of exposure to ionising radiation.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills specified in the qualification requirements. The doctoral degree is within the field of molecular biology, radiation biology or similar areas. Experience with DNA/RNA preparation and PCR analysis techniques is highly advantageous. Experience with analysis of SNPs and techniques to measure DNA damage and repair (gammaH2AX focus assay, chromosomal aberration test, micronucleus test) is regarded as an asset. Additional merits include the use of assays such as Western blot as well as cell culture skills.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2021-03-01 or as per agreement.
