Postdoctoral Fellowship in Bioengineering Neural Morphogenesis
Catholic University of Leuven Laboratory of Bioengineering and Morphogenesis
Belgium

A postdoctoral position is available in the Laboratory of Bioengineering and Morphogenesis at KU Leuven, Belgium. We focus on understanding the role of mechanical forces in guiding cell fate and morphogenesis in neural development, using bioengineered organoid model systems.

Responsibilities

The research position aims at deploying our recently developed active force manipulation techniques in combination with artificial extracellular matrices, genetically encoded biosensors and microfluidic devices to understand mechanisms of symmetry-breaking, growth and patterning during neural development. You will be involved in developing an integrated framework including spatial transcriptomics to explore the relationship between cell and tissue-scale forces and cortical patterning, morphogenesis and functional activity.

Profile

We are looking for a developmental or stem cell biologist who is excited about exploring neural development from the bottom up, by designing synthetic, biomimetic in-vitro model systems enabled by our laboratory’s tools and quantitative approach. You have a PhD degree in developmental biology, stem cell biology, biophysics or related, with at least one of the following areas of expertise: quantitative imaging and image analysis, CRISPR genome engineering, scRNAseq analysis. This project is part of a highly collaborative multidisciplinary initiative at KU Leuven focusing on the role of mechanics in organoid biology, and will involve frequent interactions with collaborating labs.

Offer

This funding for this position is secured for three years (with possibility of extension). We offer an international, interdisciplinary and challenging research environment, with many opportunities for collaboration, both at and outside KU Leuven and exposure to cutting-edge technology, including state of the art multi-omics and spatial transcriptomics. KU Leuven offers a competitive salary, including extensive social security. KU Leuven is among the top European universities and a hub for interdisciplinary research at the interface of engineering and biomedical sciences. The city of Leuven offers a historical and vibrant international environment with a rich socio-cultural life.
