Postdoctoral fellowship in transcriptome-based investigations of plasmid-host interactions

 

The current knowledge of plasmids, which are key facilitators of horizontal gene transfer - a fundamental process in the evolution of prokaryotes - is mainly based on those that encode selectable phenotypes. This is because plasmid transfer, although fast compared to other evolutionary processes, occurs at relatively low frequencies, and identifying plasmid transfer without effective selection is notoriously challenging. However, only a very small fraction of plasmids is believed to carry genes that encode easily selectable phenotypes, leaving a huge gap of fundamental knowledge.

This Postdoc fellowship is associated with “BioRep-HGT”, a project that will develop bioreporters that detect plasmid uptake but elevates the selection bias, funded by the Villum foundation. The main tasks of the Postdoc fellow will be to generate transcriptomes, preferably single-cell based, of various bacteria with- and without plasmids. Then analyze the transcriptomes to identify genes that are expressed only in the presence of plasmids. The promoters of these candidate genes will then be fused to GFP to construct the bioreporters. With these bioreporters, we will be able to unravel fundamental aspects of gene transfer.

The postdoc position is for 2 years and will be carried out at Section of Microbiology, Department of Biology, at the University of Copenhagen where you will engage in teamwork within the group and with our national and international collaborators. The position is to be filled 1.1.2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious researcher with experience in transcriptomics. Applicants should have the following qualifications: 

●    Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, or equivalent.
●    Documented experience with the analysis of large metagenomic data sets. Preferably Illumina RNA-Seq transcriptomes.
●    Hands on experience with the following will be seen as an advantage: Generating transcriptomes (RNA-Seq), Fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and/or genetic engineering/cloning.
●    Previous research on horizontal gene transfer will be seen as an advantage.
●    Fluency in English.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 430.569 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 73.627). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
