An open postdoctoral research position is available in the field of droplet microfluidic systems in the research group of Prof Caglar Elbuken ( Focus of the project is development of droplet microfluidic platforms for sensing and material synthesis. The project includes microfabrication, real-time droplet analysis, and molecular biology.

The position is located at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (FBMM) (, whose mission is to perform internationally significant research and to deliver high-level undergraduate and postgraduate education in the fields of biochemistry and molecular medicine. Research at the Faculty is carried out in 15 research groups. The Faculty has ~200 employees approximately half of whom are international personnel. The research group has access to state-of-the art microfabrication, prototyping, molecular analysis and advanced imaging/characterization systems.

Subject field and description of the position

Control of droplets in microchannels allows to perform biochemical assays using extremely low sample volumes with automated systems. However, droplet fluidic system development can only be accomplished by microfluidic experts through several trial and error cycles, since a design tool or methodology for droplet networks does not exist. This project aims to develop a methodology to design droplet fluidic circuit. Using this approach, we will find the ultimate limits of monodisperse droplet generation. The results will be applicable to already existing droplet fluidic applications and will allow higher precision droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (DDPCR) and higher quality particle synthesis. The overall goal of the project is to develop next generation droplet-based assays and to democratize the use of droplet fluidic systems. The details of the research project will be mutually agreed upon, based on the qualifications, interests, and expertise of the candidate.

The position is funded by the University of Oulu. The duration of the position is 2 years starting from the commencement date. The expected starting date is between 1.6-31.8.2020.

Required Qualifications and assessment

The successful applicant must hold a PhD degree in bioengineering, biophysics, biochemistry or a related field. Candidates whose PhD thesis has been submitted by the application deadline will also be eligible. Experience with molecular diagnostics is a requirement. Experience with microfluidic systems, microfabrication, systems engineering will be considered as assets.

Fluent oral and written English skills as well as good communication and teamwork skills are required. Demonstrated experience in writing scientific publications, potential in acquiring supplementary funding and teaching experience will be taken as merits. When assessing the applicant’s qualifications, issues to be considered will include scientific publications, familiarity with the research field, supervision experience and activity in the scientific community.

As part of the FBMM, duties may also include supervising scientific research of BSc, MSc and PhD students. Participation in teaching within the faculty curriculum is expected.

A six-month trial period will be effective in the beginning of the contract.


The salary is in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel) level 5. In addition, there is a share increase at most, 50% of the base salary, which is based on personal achievements and performance. The salary is in practice roughly 3,300 – 4,400 € / month, depending on qualifications, performance and experience.
