Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry

Chemistry Research Laboratory, Mansfield Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £32,236 - £39,609 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry to work under the supervision of Professor Philipp Kukura on a research project funded by the ERC for a period of 12 months in the first instance, with an option to extension.

The project focuses on the technological aspects of single molecule mass photometry based on interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT). The candidate will be involved with both the construction and maintenance of experimental setups, as well as the development of novel approaches, including combination of iSCAT with other advanced methods. The role will focus on the technological aspects, and include both the construction of advanced optical setups, as well as interfacing to produce advanced experimental setups at the very limit of ultrasensitive optical microscopy. There will be extensive opportunities to immediately apply the developments to a broad range of problems in the life sciences, and use this feedback to produce genuinely useful instrumentation that can address the most pressing contemporary questions ranging from fundamental research to diagnostics.

Duties will include managing own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. Adapting existing and developing new scientific techniques and experimental protocols and undertaking comprehensive and systematic literature reviews and write up the results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

You should have a PhD in physics, chemistry, engineering or a related area (or have submitted a PhD thesis prior to taking up the appointment).

The post will be based in the Department of Chemistry, Mansfield Road, Oxford, OX1 3TA.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 20 March 2019 can be considered.

The University of Oxford and the Department of Chemistry are Athena SWAN Silver award holders. Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and ethnic minority candidates, who are under-represented in Chemistry research posts in Oxford.
