University of Munster

The research group of Molecular Evolution and Bioinformatics in the Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the following position from mid 2021 on:

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in
(salary level TV-L E13, 100%)

The regular weekly working hours for a full-time, 100% position are currently 39 hours and 50 minutes. All posts can, as a rule, also be filled as a part-time position, if there are no compelling work-related reasons against doing so. This fixed-term post will continue until 30 June 2022, with the possibility of an extension of 3 years. There are no teaching obligations but the successful candidate will be welcome to contribute to course and project supervision.

Research area

The successful applicant will undertake research in the area of computational and/or theoretical molecular biophysics and/or biochemistry.

The expected tasks include:

  •  Construction of simplified and atomistic models to simulate the evolution of molecules and molecular complexes
  •  The analysis of biological data to reconstruct past evolutionary events of genes, genomes and proteins with the goal to align them with simulations
  •  Design and application of computational molecular fitness landscapes
  •  Stochastic and/or analytic analysis of dynamic evolutionary events such as gene/transcript loss and gain or artificial populations
  •  Collaboration in and assistance coordinating larger research consortia related to genome and protein evolution

The successful candidate is also encouraged to build up their own research agenda related to the group's research goals in order to apply for additional funding.

Required background and skill set

All candidates should have a PhD in chemistry, bioinformatics, physics or mathematics and proven research experience in one, or several of the following areas: biophysics, biochemistry, bioinformatics, theoretical or mathematical biology. Experience in handling large data sets as well as proficiency in modelling and simulation will be an advantage, as is international research experience and a proven publication and presentation record (in English). German language skills are not a requirement, but a willingness to learn is desirable.

The University of Münster is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the proportion of female academics. Consequently, we actively encourage applications by women. Female candidates with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered within the framework of the legal possibilities.
