Job description

College of Life and Environmental Sciences

The above full-time post is available from 02/09/2019 to 31/08/2019 in the College of Life and Environmental Sciences

The post

Viruses are the most abundant organisms on Earth, and profoundly impact nutrient cycling in the oceans. Viral predation on microbial hosts is responsible for the largest carbon fluxes in the oceans. As part of a UK NERC-funded collaboration to investigate the utility of eDNA in environmental monitoring, we are hiring a Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Assistant (depending on experience) to analyse time-series metagenomic and amplicon sequence data, with a focus on the viral component of DNA that passes through a 0.2 Um filter.

The candidate will be responsible for (1) development and optimisation of long-read sequencing for high-fidelity viral metagenomics using PacBio and/or MinION platforms; (2) development of reproducible pipelines for metagenomic assembly and analyses of short and long-read timeseries data from a 3 year study of eDNA in the Western English Channel; (3) ecological analyses of microbial communities supported by rich environmental metadata; (4) synthesis of results into manuscripts aimed at top-tier journals and for presentation at international conferences.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop and deliver research objectives and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events. Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion for Postdoctoral Research Associates) or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will:

* Have experience commensurate with the position of library preparation for PacBio and/or MinION sequencing, including protocol optimisation
* Be a nationally recognised authority in bioinformatic analyses of environmental microbial communities, ideally with experience in either viral metagenomics or analysis of long-read sequence data.
* Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies, with an ability to keep pace with the rapid developments in this field.
* Be able to work collaboratively within a tight-knit and supportive research group, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.
* Knowledge of time-series analyses is desirable.
