Institute for Molecular Bioscience

IMB is a global leader in multidisciplinary life sciences research, bringing together 500 researchers from across the globe for disease discovery, application and sustainable futures.

Formed in 2000 as an initiative of The University of Queensland, State and Federal Governments and private philanthropy, IMB is one of the largest life sciences institutes in the Asia-Pacific region. It has capitalised on one of the greatest periods of discovery in history – the genetic and molecular basis of life and its diversity.

About This Opportunity

As Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will apply cutting edge computational approaches to understand the molecular underpinnings of cellular identity and ageing. You will join the multidisciplinary Nefzger group made up of wet-lab and computational biologists (e.g. Dr Marina Naval-Sanchez).The successful applicant will leverage bulk and single cell data sets to characterize transcription factor network changes driving cell state transitions, such as in the context of cellular reprogramming and cell ageing. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Nguyen group, spatial transcriptomics data from young and aged organs will be analysed.

Primary duties will include:

  • Design and conduct independent in silico experiments.
  • Test hypothesis derived from the data analysis with wet-lab group members using cell and animal models.
  • Develop and refine data analysis pipelines.
  • Provide reports on projects for collaborators and supervisors.
  • Maintain awareness of broad capabilities for computational analysis platforms in cellular genomics to adapt protocols for testing and implementation.
  • Develop experimental designs to achieve project goals.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

You should possess (or be in progress towards) a PhD a statistical genetics and computational bioinformatics or relevant related fields. Demonstrated experience working  with large scale genomic data   (in particular RNA- seq, ATAC-Seq, single cell analyses) and code writing in languages such as R, Matlab, Perl, or Python for bioinformatics analyses will be essential for the role.

The ability to work closely and collaboratively with bench scientists to solve complex biological problems and present complex results to both bioinformatics and non-bioinformatics audiences will be required to excel in this role.

Applications are open to Australian Citizens, permanent residents and temporary visa holders currently in Australia.

We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the University.
