Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) 

QAAFI is a research institute of the University of Queensland (UQ) which was established in 2010 and comprises of four research centres – the Centre for Crop Science, the Centre for Horticultural Science, the Centre for Animal Science and the Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences.

QAAFI's team of 450 researchers, postgraduate students and support staff undertake high impact science for agriculture and food industries. The institute’s strong partnership with the Queensland Government provides our researchers with a direct link to the agriculture industry in Queensland, and world class field research facilities throughout Queensland. Agriculture is one of UQ’s highest ranked research fields nationally and internationally and QAAFI is a global leader in agricultural research in subtropical and tropical production systems.

 About This Opportunity

You will develop a coherent research program focused on crop breeding and quantitative genetics, supporting the improvement of durable disease resistance in a major crop. You’ll develop new strategies for the discovery and utilisation of novel sources of disease resistance and other important traits, in combination with reproductive strategies to reduce crop breeding cycles in order to accelerate the rate of genetic gain.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre.

Our Ideal Candidate

Along with a PhD in area related to crop genetics, you will have an emerging profile conducting research in the area of plant pathology and mapping quantitative disease resistance. You will have experience planning, designing and running glasshouse and field trials, including the generation of new germplasm through designed crossing schemes.

You will hold evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals, have experience presenting at conferences and have contributed toward successfully obtaining external research funding.

Additionally, at Level B, you will have a growing record of supervising Honours and RHD students to successful completion. At Level B, practical experience with developing new germplasm through designed crossing schemes and/or a strong background in coding and scripting languages, such as R or Python would be desirable.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term (three year) position. This appointment will be made at either Academic Research Level A or B, depending on experience:

  • At Academic level A, the base salary will be in the range $83,672 - $92,782, plus super of up to 17%. The total package will be in the range $97,844 - $108,555.
  • At Academic level B, the base salary will be in the range $97,590- $115,888, plus super of up to 17%. The total package will be in the range $114,181 - $135,590.
