Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Plant Microbiota Interactions

Level of employment: 80-100%

Possible date of entry: 1 January 2021

The research group 'Plant Microbe Interactions' at the Department of Environmental Sci-ences, University of Basel (https://duw.unibas.ch/en/plant-microbe-interactions/) is welcom-ing applications for a postdoctoral researcher position. We investigate fundamental ques-tions of root microbiome biology such as, we want to uncover how plants benefit from their root microbiota for growth or defense. The open position is part of the SNSF project 'Plant Responsiveness to Microbiota Feedbacks' that aims at identifying the genetic basis how plants respond to differentially composed soil microbial communities.

Your position

This is a collaborative project with the group of Prof. Claude Becker (GMI Vienna, LMU Munich). We have performed a large scale phenotyping of Arabidopsis accessions for their feedbacks to two contrasting microbial communities (see Hu et al. 2018; Nat. Comm.) The next step is now to perform a genome-wise association study (GWAS) and to identify can-didate loci explaining the phenotypic diversity in microbiota feedbacks. Key task presents the validation of candidate genes using mutant knock-out and complementation experi-ments. This work is accompanied by a University funded PhD project focusing on the phys-iological and molecular characterizing of the microbiota feedbacks of Arabidopsis.

Your profile

We are looking for young and talented candidates with a doctoral degree in molecular plant science or a related discipline. Candidates are expected to have a strong background in genetics and plant microbe interactions. Experience in microbiomics or biostatistics/-informatics presents a valuable asset. We encourage applicants that are highly self-motivated and committed, have a proactive mindset and a getting-things-done attitude, are collaborative and have the ability to work well in an interdisciplinary and international envi-ronment. Fluency in oral English is a prerequisite.

We offer you

We offer a dynamic research environment, including state-of-the art research facilities and enthusiastic colleagues from different nationalities and scientific backgrounds. The position can be filled at 80-100% and is currently limited to 2.5 years. Salary will be according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation (www.snf.ch). Anticipated starting date is beginning of 2021.

Application / Contact

Please send your complete application documents in one pdf, including a motivation letter, a CV and contact details of two references to pmi-support@unibas.ch. For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Klaus Schlaeppi (klaus.schlaeppi@unibas.ch). Review of applica-tions will begin 23 October 2020, and will continue until the position is filled.
