Postdoctoral Researcher in The Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences
University of Eastern Finland Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences

Project Researcher/Postdoctoral Researcher, Eddy Covariance

The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We offer education in nearly one hundred major subjects, and are home to approximately 15,500 students and 2,500 members of staff. We operate in Joensuu and Kuopio. In international rankings, we are ranked among the leading universities in the world.

The Faculty of Science and Forestry operates on the Kuopio and Joensuu campuses of the University of Eastern Finland. The mission of the faculty is to carry out internationally recognised scientific research and to offer research-education in the fields of natural sciences and forest sciences. The faculty invests in all of the strategic research areas of the university. The faculty’s environments for research and learning are international, modern and multidisciplinary.  The faculty has approximately 3,800 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students and some 490 postgraduate students. The number of staff amounts to 560.

We are now inviting applications for

a Project Researcher or a Postdoctoral Researcher position, Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences (Biochemistry Research Group) Kuopio Campus
(extended application period)

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join a research team with focus on ‘Greenhouse gas fluxes from agriculture and forestry in Finland’.

The project involves eddy covariance measurements of GHG exchange from an agricultural site cultivated with a mixture of red clover and perennial grasses and from a clear-cut forest floor site. The agricultural site is located in the Maaninka region, about 40 km from the UEF Kuopio Campus. The clear-cut forest site is located adjacent to the University of Helsinki operated SMEAR tower in the Hyytiälä forest station, about 270 km from UEF Kuopio. The objective of agricultural measurements is to quantify the annual CObalance and N2O exchange from the legume grass mixture and investigate the controlling factors. Measurements at the clear-cut forest floor site will help understand the impact of forest management options such as the intensive forest harvesting for bioenergy use. This open position offers an excellent opportunity to interact with the internationally known eddy covariance community in Finland and elsewhere.

  • The candidate must have a PhD awarded in the fields of agronomy, forestry, environmental sciences, ecology, physical geography, computer science, soil science or any other closely related subject.
  • Experience with GHG measurement (eddy covariance/chambers), bioenergy life cycle assessment, or biogeochemical modelling using models such as DNDC is highly desirable
  • The candidate must be able to conduct fieldwork independently and possess a driver's license valid in Finland
  • The candidate must be fluent in English to be able to write, communicate and interact in an English-speaking environment.
  • The candidate must have documented experience in writing and publishing scientific articles
  • Experience in either one or more of the following is highly desirable: carbon cycle research in boreal landscapes (i.e. agriculture, forests), as well as skills in R, Python, Matlab, GIS, logger programming and/or in the handling and processing of large data sets.

The postdoc location is at the Biogeochemistry Research Group in the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio Campus.
