Position Description

The Cabernard lab is looking for an enthusiastic Postdoctoral scholar o join our lab at the University of Washington’s Department of Biology. The position is 100% FTE with an annual service period of 12 months. This is a non-tenured position and is not eligible for promotion.

The lab is generally interested in the molecular cell biology and mechanics of asymmetric cell division. We are using Drosophila melanogaster as well as emerging model organisms, such as marine invertebrates, to investigate the following topics: the dynamics of cell polarization, cellular and subcellular asymmetry, cytoskeletal dynamics, cell fate acquisition and maintenance, organogenesis and morphogenesis.  

We apply several advanced techniques – including but not restricted to – live cell imaging, superresolution microscopy, optogenetics, mechanical manipulations, force measurements, CRISPR/Cas9, RNA sequencing.  

The Department of Biology is located on UW’s main campus in Seattle. The UW is one of the world’s preeminent public universities and Seattle is a vibrant and very livable city in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. The lab is located in the new Life Sciences Building (LSB;, providing state of the art lab space and equipment. The proximity to University of Washington Biophysics, Biochemistry, Genome Sciences, Molecular Engineering, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the newly formed Allan Institute for Cell Science offer an exciting and stimulating work environment with scientific collaborations across and beyond campus.

The postdoctoral scholar position is fully funded for at least 2 years.

The successful candidate will have a solid background in Cell or Developmental Biology, Molecular Biology, Biophysics or Biochemistry. We particularly welcome applications from individuals with a background or interest in Physics, (Bio)-Engineering or Mathematics. Experience in coding and image analysis are highly advantageous.

Successful candidates must have a completed PhD or foreign equivalent. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required. Strong work ethic and the ability to work in a team will also be considered.
