Position Summary

The Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for Professor and Chair of the Department of Biostatistics. The Department of Biostatistics is internationally recognized as a leader in Biostatistics research and training. It is one of seven departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health and was founded in 1949 with the mission to improve the health and wellbeing of the population. This mission is accomplished through the interaction of teaching, research and service. Major research strengths include: genomics and statistical genetics, survival analysis, analyses relevant to environmental health, precision health, machine learning/artificial intelligence, imaging, longitudinal data, and semiparametric inference, among other areas. The Department of Biostatistics has advanced a major teaching and research initiative in data science in recent years. The department has NIH training grants in genomics, imaging, environmental health, and Big data. In the US News & World Report, the department is ranked #4 in the US and ranks 1st in NIH funding. Biostatistics was 4th among all departments and centers across campus in research funding at UNC Chapel Hill for fiscal year 2019, with $47M sponsored research awards to faculty. The Department (https://sph.unc.edu/bios/biostatistics/) consists of 18 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 15 fixed-term faculty, 7 joint faculty, 73 permanent staff members and 49 temporary employees. As part of its mission to solve public health problems, the Department of Biostatistics houses the highly successful Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC) and the Carolina Survey Research Laboratory (CSRL). The Department has 125 doctoral students, 59 master’s students, and 51 undergraduate students

Educational Requirements

Earned Doctorate in appropriate field.

Qualifications and Experience

The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure and have an outstanding publication and funding record as well as an international reputation in biostatistics. She or he must have a demonstrated commitment to: professional and public service, interdisciplinary collaboration, promotion of diversity and inclusion, mentoring and teaching 21st century learners. The candidate should be an innovator with demonstrated leadership, communication and administrative abilities who can help the department articulate its mission and promote strategies to achieve that mission. The applicant should have a proven ability to think and lead strategically, and to balance multiple priorities, assist with development activities and manage the finances and human resources of our large, dynamic and diverse department. Candidates should also be prepared to serve as a leader in the School and to collaborate across the School and University with other department and senior leaders.
