A position as Professor in Astrobiology is available from 1 June, 2019 at Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University (http://bios.au.dk/en/), Denmark.



The position
We seek an internationally competitive researcher with a strong academic track record in Astrobiology. Applicants must be able to document cutting edge interdisciplinary research, the ability to obtain research funding, as well as teaching and supervision experience. The applicant is expected to have a research group and a research program in Astrobiology. The applicant is furthermore expected to establish collaboration with related research environments at Aarhus University and to document international collaboration with researchers in astrobiology. The applicant has to take a leading role in integrating Astrobiology in the university curriculum, and is expected to contribute to communicating the science to the general public.



The appointee will be part of the section for Microbiology (http://bios.au.dk/om-instituttet/organisation/microbiology/). The section’s research spans the whole field of microbiology from molecular microbiology and physiology to microbial biogeochemistry, ecology, and evolution, with a strong focus on aquatic systems. The appointee will furthermore be associated with the Stellar Astrophysics Centre (http://sac.au.dk), a Center of Excellence under the Danish National Science Research Foundation funded until 2022. The Centre studies the stars and their planetary systems based on a comprehensive strategy that seeks to produce a complete picture of the structure, atmosphere of the stars and the planets in their orbit. Through integration of astrobiological research the Centre works on answering questions concerning the habitability of the exoplanets. In addition, the appointee will have access to, and is expected to engage in, the interdisciplinary Mars Simulation Laboratory (http://marslab.au.dk). 



The appointee will have full access to modern laboratories and equipment, as well as excellent technical assistance, shared with other members of the department. The appointee is expected to participate in the teaching of courses on both undergraduate and graduate level, to supervise master and PhD-students, and to contribute to the development of PhD courses.

The Department of Bioscience 
The Department of Bioscience hosts research programmes, teaching curricula and consultancy that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. The Department conducts world-class research in the areas of Aquatic Biology and Ecology, Arctic Environment and Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, Genetics and Evolution, Microbiology, and Zoophysiology. The Department currently employs approximately 350 academic and technical staff and 75 PhD students. In addition to the PhD-programme, BSc and MSc study programmes with close to 500 students enrolled are offered.

Application procedure 
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process. 



Formalities and salary range 
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. 



The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
