Professor in Integrative Animal Physiology at Aarhus University, Denmark


The Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, invites applications for a position as full professor within the field of integrative animal physiology. The position is available as soon as possible.


We seek an internationally competitive researcher with a strong scientific background in animal physiology with focus on the biochemical and genetic mechanisms underlying physiological responses to the environment in animal models.  The candidate is expected to establish his/her own research group as an integrated part of the Zoophysiology section at the Department of Bioscience. The candidate will have access to existing research facilities for conducting physiology, cell biology and biochemistry based experiments, which include in house animal husbandry. In the assessment, consideration will be given to originality and long-term vision of proposed research plans. The appointee is expected to participate in the teaching of courses on both undergraduate and graduate level, to supervise master and PhD-students, and to contribute to the development of PhD courses.

The Department of Bioscience

The Department of Bioscience hosts research programmes, teaching curricula and consultancy that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. The Department conducts world-class research in the areas of Aquatic Biology and Ecology, Arctic Environment and Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, Genetics and Evolution, Microbiology, and Zoophysiology. The Department currently employs approximately 350 academic and technical staff and 75 PhD students. In addition to the PhD-programme, BSc and MSc study programmes with close to 500 students enrolled are offered.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.

Research activities will be evaluated in relation to actual research time. Thus, we encourage applicants to specify periods of leave without research activities, in order to be able to subtract these periods from the span of the scientific career during the evaluation of scientific productivity.
