The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences is Finland’s most high-profile and extensive hub of research and teaching in the field. The Faculty educates experts to meet the needs of universities, research institutes, government, schools and the business sector.


The Faculty is comprised of three units or research programmes: Ecosystems and Environment, Organismal and Evolutionary Biology (, and Molecular and Integrative Biosciences.


The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences also has biological stations at Kilpisjärvi, in Lapland, and Lammi, in Southern Finland, as well as a Zoological station at Tvärminne on the coast of the Baltic Sea.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term associate / assistant professorship (tenure track) depending on their qualifications and career stage.


We seek an internationally competitive researcher with a strong academic track-record in plant biology. The position will strengthen and expand the research in plant biology in a highly international research environment at the Viikki Campus centered on biosciences.


We are looking for candidates who will complement the research profile in Organismal and Evolutionary Biology research programme with new insights into plant biology (e.g. ecological / evolutionary / molecular plant biology).


Viikki Biocenters offer excellent facilities for molecular and experimental work including extensive research greenhouses, common garden and phenotyping facilities on campus.


The current research groups in OEB work in the areas of plant evolutionary ecology, and plant stress and developmental biology. In addition to work with model plant species, work is done with native plant species, including trees.


The appointee is expected to engage extensively in collaboration with other staff members and participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision especially in plant biology.


An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents.


An appointee to an assistant / associate professorship in the tenure track system ( shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant / associate professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means.


When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention will be given to scientific publications, teaching experience and pedagogical training as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and positions in Finnish and international organizations.


There is no requirement to be proficient in Finnish for foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good skills in English.


Annual gross salary for an assistant/associate professor amounts to 50,000 - 68,500 euros and for full professor to 64,000 - 96,000 euros.

3. A report (max. 3 pages) of experience and merits which are of relevance for the evaluation of teaching skills
4. A numbered list of publications in English and other works with which the applicant wishes to demonstrate their competence and merits, with five most important publications highlighted with brief explanations.
