Professorship For Radiation And Remote Sensing Of Atmospheres Grading

Responsibilities :

Representation of the subject of radiation and remote sensing of atmospheres in research and teaching.

The Department of Geosciences constitutes a new network for planetary systems and remote sensing. The professorship at the Institute of Meteorology covers the field of radiative transfer and remote sensing in this network and deals with measurements of processes in the Earth's atmosphere as well as in atmospheres of other planets, using and developing earth, aircraft and satellite-bound measuring instruments.

Further requirements:

  • internationally recognized and excellent research achievements in the field of radiative transfer of planetary atmospheres, focusing on the atmosphere of the earth and the remote sensing of atmospheres as well as international teaching experience
  • proven expertise in the development of innovative methods, in particular in the combination of radiation modeling, radiative transfer theory and interpretation of satellite measurements
  • Experience in applying for and implementing research initiatives and third-party funded projects


Expectations for the future activity:

In addition to the official duties resulting from § 99 BerlHG in particular, the following activities are also expected of the person appointed:


  • Teaching in the bachelor and master's program Meteorology as well as in the planned international master's program "Planetary Science", especially in the fields of radiation and remote sensing of atmospheres
  • Development of a promising, internationally visible and third-attractively attractive research program with one or more of the following focal points:

(i) Radiation transfer modeling, also for numerical climate and weather models

(ii) Development and application of remote sensing techniques that lead to a better understanding of processes in planetary atmospheres

(iii) preparing and supporting new satellite missions

(iv) Use of existing ground and airborne infrastructure for radiation measurement


  • interdisciplinary cooperation, in particular within the framework of the Research Network for Planetary Systems and Remote Sensing, with working groups of the institute, as well as within the Geo.X network
  • Integration in international research initiatives in the field of earth and planet exploration (eg in cooperation with Eumetsat, ESA and NASA)
  • Treatment of discipline-relevant gender and diversity approaches.
