At the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP) at Stockholm University, research and education is conducted in an international environment. The subject areas are Ecology and Evolution, Ecotoxicology, Marine Biology, Plant Physiology and Plant Systematics. Some of the research has direct environmental and societal relevance and the approach is often broad and interdisciplinary. About 140 people are working at the Department, of which ca. 35 are teachers and researchers and 50 are PhD students.

Main responsibilities

The main responsibility of the technical assistant is to provide technical support to the Bio-optical and Remote Sensing group at DEEP. The research assistant will assist with routine bio-optical measurements, both in the laboratory and during field work. This includes measurments of the concentration of Chlorophyll-a and suspended particulate matter (SPM) as well as the absorption of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the water column. The work also entails data analysis as well as quality control and error assessment of the data, and the preparation of data files for submission to dedicated data bases. This job also provides an opportunity to develop one’s skills with oceanographic and optical equipment.

Qualification requirements

We are looking for a person with academic training in marine chemistry or marine biology, or with laboratory or engineering education, with a focus on water chemistry or biology. Education in marine ecology, experience with taking measurements on a ship, measuring turbidity and/or chlorophyll-a (spectrophotometry) are a merit.

The successful candidate has ample experience working with Excel spreadsheets. Programming skills and/or experience working with data base software is a merit.

A driver’s license is an absolute requirement for the field work. Note that the field work entails working on ships/boats and thus is not recommended for someone who easily becomes sea sick. A good knowledge of both Swedish and English (in speech and writing) is required. We attach great importance to your ability to learn new things, problem-solving and logistics skills, taking initiative, working in a structured manner as well as an interest in marine optics.

Terms of employment

This is a full-time fixed-term position initially for four months, starting from 1 September 2020. Part-time work can be discussed. There may be a possiblility for an extension of the employment for another three to nine months.

Salaries at Stockholm University are determined on an individual basis.
