£27511 to £40322 per annum, (pro rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience (minimum £30942 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

In Partnership with Motif FoodWorks, the Massachusetts-based animal-free ingredient innovation company, we are looking to recruit a Research Associate/Fellow to join a highly dynamic, interdisciplinary team focusing on biomolecular composites, which underpin development of new sustainable and healthy foods. The project seeks to explore fundamental aspects of flow and drying behaviour as well as develop processing techniques to create food grade biopolymer fibre. The candidates will actively collaborate with experts in the School of Biosciences and National Centre for Molecular Hydrodynamics, as well as closely interact with the industry partner. The candidates will also interface experts in the School of Chemistry and the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. 

The project will involve the use of bimolecular characterisation technique, such as rheology, soft contact tribology and a wide range of microscopy and material characterisation techniques to develop novel biopolymer composite materials. In addition, the successful candidate will conduct research using our state-of-the-art Food Processing Facility and will research and develop advanced processing techniques and scale-up methods.

You will have (or be close to completion of) a PhD in Chemical/Biological Engineering, Food Science, Biotechnology, Soft Matter/Biomaterial Science, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Physics/Biophysics or a related discipline, and extensive knowledge and experience of bimolecular characterisation and/or food/polymer processing. Good COMSOL/MATLAB skills are highly desirable. You will also have a positive approach to collaborative research and the drive to make a significant contribution to make this highly innovative project a success.

The position is offered on a full time (36.25hrs per week), fixed term contract until 31 August 2021. Job share opportunities may be considered.
