Role Description

We are looking for a highly qualified full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the group of Dr David Kent based in the Department of Biology at the University of York ( The Kent laboratory's research focuses on understanding normal and malignant blood stem cell biology in both mouse models and primary human samples. In particular, we have recently been exploring the physical and mechanical biology of blood stem cells for which this postholder will play a major role. The lab has previously pioneered approaches in single cell biology which quantify and track normal blood stem cells in humans (Lee-Six et al., Nature 2018), link single stem cell function to single cell gene expression (Wilson et al, Cell Stem Cell2015; Nestorowa et al., Blood2016; Shepherd et al., Blood 2018) and determined that the order of mutation acquisition impacts disease evolution and clinical features of blood cancers (Ortmann et al., N Eng. J. Med. 2015).

The position will explore a new and exciting area of stem cell biology with potential implications for disease evolution and stem cell expansion: the physical biology of blood stem cells. This postholder will conduct research and explore the impact of physical forces on the fate choices of highly purified single blood stem cells as well as develop tools to help expand blood cells outside the body. The postholder will further benefit from interactions with Professor Thomas Krauss and Dr. Steven Johnson (York) and Dr Kevin Chalut (Cambridge). They will drive independent research projects, but also work closely with other lab members and assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals. The postholder will be expected to analyse and write up research results for dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and will be encouraged to participate in public engagement and science outreach activities. Opportunities for mentorship and additional collaborations will be available and encouraged. The postholder may assist with undergraduate teaching in own area of expertise.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

The successful candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent research experience in bioengineering or biophysics or have substantial equivalent experience in microfabrication. Particular expertise in microfluidic device design/construction, time-lapse imaging, and software design are desirable. Experience or exposure to the fields of stem cell biology, immunology, flow cytometry, and molecular biology would be an additional asset although not formally required.  Experience working with live primary cells would be highly desirable. The successful candidate should have demonstrable research experience and should have presented their research at national and international conferences. This position is funded by the European Research Council. The post is full-time, fixed term for 2 years with the possibility of extension and salary will be in the range £32,817- £40,322 per annum.

Interview date: week commencing 26/10/20

For informal enquiries: Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be made to Dr. David Kent or Dr. Jillian Barlow via email: or For an alternative contact, please email
