Role Description

Department

The Department of Biology at the University of York was ranked in the top 10 for overall research performance and first for research impact in REF2014.  The department covers a broad range of biological research, supported by excellent facilities and supports a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary ethos.  We are looking for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to drive mass spectrometry-based data collection and downstream analysis as part of a BBSRC-funded Industrial Partnership Award in the laboratory of Professor James Chong.

Role

Based in Biology at York, you will work individually and in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Exeter and Amur Energy on research projects that will include the generation of metabolic profiles from microbial communities used in biogas generation at a range of scales through the process of anaerobic digestion. You will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated team-player, ideally with experience in microbial metabolomics and relevant data analysis.  You will be expected to interact with members of the group and department as well as our external research partners, and provide data in a timely and organised fashion.

Your duties will include: analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods; writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities; contributing to the identification of possible new areas of research. You will be expected to assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects. You may also be called on to assist with undergraduate teaching (usually for projects or tutorials) in your area of expertise.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • First degree and PhD (or equivalent) in relevant subject areas
  • Practical experience relevant to the post (e.g. mass spectrometry, metabolomics, statistically rigorous large dataset analysis)
  • Experience of drafting and publishing research manuscripts and communicating research results at conferences and to collaborators
  • Attention to detail and an ability to plan and prioritise work to meet deadlines
  • A proactive, collaborative attitude
  • A commitment to personal development and updating of knowledge and skills

This role is offered on a fixed term basis until 31 December 2022

Interview date: 27 April 2020

For informal enquiries: please contact Dr Emma Rand (emma.rand@york.ac.uk) or Prof James Chong (james.chong@york.ac.uk)
