Title Associate/Research Associate in Molecular Biology

Position Description
Under direction of the Principal Investigator, provide lab support for a research laboratory using animal (mice) models and cell and molecular biology techniques for a new research laboratory focused on mucosal immunity and molecular biology techniques as related to periodontology and other mucosal immunopathologies. Applicant must have demonstrated ability in conducting research, possess excellent communication skills, be self-motivated, work with a high degree of integrity, and possess a willingness and ability to acquire new skills.
 
Essential Responsibilities: 
 
1.      Coordinate the day-to-day laboratory operations of the Silva laboratory. 
2.      Provide hands-on help when needed, including occasional work on holidays or weekends.
3.      Oversee all required quality assurance and quality improvement activities, and health safety requirements for the entire laboratory, including the research components, of the staff and visiting scholars/fellows.
4.      Coordinate maintenance of a large and genetically diverse animal (mice) colony. Independently perform laboratory procedures on research animal tissue/specimens (histological sectioning, staining, IF, IHC, PCR, Flowcytometry etc.) for study purposes.
5.      The applicant is expected to show initiative in overseeing these duties independently, maintain a strong work ethic, have a positive attitude and excellent communication skills, and lead by example.
6.      Applicant must show a marked degree of accuracy in preparing reagents, completing experiments, recording results (both written and electronic records), analyzing findings and preparing written and oral reports.

This position is a one-year term appointment from date of hire with the possibility of extension.

Basic Qualifications
1.      Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
2.      Proficiency with cutting frozen and paraffin embedded tissue.
3.      Proficiency with various histologic, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemical staining procedures.
4.      Basic knowledge of techniques to prepare tissue for microscopic analyses.
5.      Highly organized, detail orientated and strong problem-solving skills.
6.      Basic knowledge of animal colony maintenance and related book keeping.
7.      Basic knowledge of bench research work including ELISA, PCR, RT-PCR, Western Blotting assays, Flow cytometry.
8.      Advanced computer knowledge including MS Word, MS Excel and database management.
9.      Highly effectively communicator as both a temporary employee supervisor and as a team member.
10.  Laboratory duties require the candidate to work with mice, be able to sit for extended periods of time wearing protective gear and be able to work after hours, on weekends or holidays as needed.

Additional Qualifications
1.      Master’s degree in immunology, pathology, molecular biology or related field. Research laboratory bench experience. 
2.      Experience with managing and maintaining mouse colonies for research studies.
