Research Associate in Biomedical Research
University of Cambridge Institute for Medical Research
United Kingdom

We are seeking two enthusiastic and motivated Postdoctoral Research Associates to join the group of Dr Janet Deane at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research. The CIMR is based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, is part of the University of Cambridge Clinical School and possesses excellent core facilities and laboratory space. Our team uses multidisciplinary approaches to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying rare neurodegenerative diseases. We have recently received Wellcome Trust funding to study the molecular and cellular consequences of altered glycosphingolipid processing on membrane trafficking in cell-based models of these diseases. Our research is addressing two main questions: how do specific lipid-protein interactions direct membrane trafficking; and what are the cellular consequences of mistrafficking?

The successful candidates must: 1) hold a PhD in Biochemistry, Cell Biology or a relevant subject; 2) be able to work efficiently in order to generate publication-quality data; 3) be able to think creatively and have an enthusiasm for finding new approaches to tackle scientific problems; 4) have good interpersonal skills and be able to communicate their work clearly in both formal and informal settings, and 5) have great attention to detail and excellent record keeping. To address the research questions, the candidate must possess experience in biochemistry and protein chemistry, and/or cell biology and microscopy. Additional experience in lipid biochemistry, quantitative proteomics, membrane trafficking, pluripotent stem cell culture or structural biology would be advantageous. Due to the multidisciplinary and supportive nature of the laboratory there is scope for enthusiastic candidates to be trained in additional techniques and expand their research skills.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
