Research Associate in Metabolic Science
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

We are seeking a research associate with experience in cloning, molecular biology, and gene editing to help generate human reporter cell lines and either constitutively or conditionally modulate the expression of candidate genes. These efforts will support our group's efforts to use human pluripotent stem cells to study disease mechanisms and discover potential therapies for obesity and neurodegenerative disease. The principal aim of the position is to support multiple projects in the laboratory, though there is potential for the successful candidate to pursue independent research if there is time and interest.

The position will be based in the laboratory of Dr. Florian Merkle ( at the Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science at the University of Cambridge. Our group studies the mechanisms that contribute to obesity and neurodegeneration using a combination of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) and animal models. In particular, we study the effect of environmental and genetic factors on the function of hPSC-derived cell populations relevant to obesity and neurodegeneration, with the ultimate aim of identifying new effective therapies for these diseases. The successful candidate will contribute to the design and execution of gene editing experiments to generate new cell types, explore the function of individual genes, support CRISPR screens, and enable high throughput cellular assays and drug screens. These studies are executed by an interdisciplinary and highly collaborative team with expertise in developmental and stem cell biology, neuroscience, gene editing, disease modelling, genomics, and bioinformatics. The position will provide many opportunities for personal and technical development, and give the successful candidate the opportunity to make a substantial impact in numerous areas of research.

The position is funded by the New York Stem Cell Foundation (, enabling the successful applicant to join a world-class international network to tackle major challenges in human health. Overall, this project represents and outstanding career development opportunity for a highly motivated applicants.

It is essential that you have a PhD or higher with a concentration in molecular biology, genomics or a related field, coupled with practical experience with cloning and other basic techniques in molecular and cellular biology (e.g. vector and primer design, sequencing, cell culture, transfection).

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Informal inquiries about this position should be directed to Florian Merkle at with reference number RG25284 in the subject line.
